Insidious Growth - More Chaos Cultists

The trouble with a cult is that it can grow. A charismatic leader and an attractive offering brings the desperate, vulnerable and weak-willed. I've recruited some more cultists to the Benevolent Brothers - this time a pair with autoguns and my first disciple, Grund.

The Benevolent Brothers door to door preaching.

My cultists, Kort and Oskar, are simply cheap bodies to support the cult. Both are unmodified Citadel 2000AD sculpts - Kort is a Rogue Trooper Nort, and Oskar is a Judge Dredd perp. Technically I guess they're not muties, although Oskar is rather ugly and who knows what Kort is hiding under his mask!

Grund is the cult's first disciple - a large-framed mutie with a penchant for big guns with a high rate of fire.

I built Grund from the torso of a Gorkamorka mutie, mated with the lower body of a Necromunda Goliath ganger. I adapted his gun to turn it into a heavy stubber, and gave him a backup autogun for when he inevitably runs out of ammo.

Grund is one of three figures in the cult that are based on Gorkamorka muties, including the long rifle cultist shown below.

The Gorkamorka muties are a little-tapped resource I think - they're lovely Paul Muller sculpts and relatively uncommon. They make fine non-chaotic mutants, being all lumpy and bumpy, rather than clawed and horned.

Here's the full current strength of the Benevolent Brothers:

  1. Hacking up Gorkamorka muties! :O I've long wanted to do a muties warband for Gorkamorka ... haven't found anyone to play though. Haven't found anyone willing to commit to a Necromunda campaign for that matter either ...

Sorry for my rambling, great minis as usual. I love this gang! They're so unique.

    1. There was minimal hacking involved! I actually picked up about 10 mutie torsos a few years ago specifically for conversions - they didn't come with legs or mounts. I figure they're suitable as conversion fodder ;)

  2. In the long run, the Muties and Diggaz have aged the best of the Gorkamorka stuff. The regular Orks were an important intermediate step between the RT/2nd Ed Orks and the ones we know today, but they are kinda weedy these days. But the Muties and Diggaz are still good stuff.

I like the idea of Chaos Cult proselytizing door-to-door. "Excuse me ma'am, but have you heard the word of our Lord and Saviour Tzeentch?" XD

    1. I agree, those Paul Muller sculpts still look great. They still have a nice proportion and great details. But then Paul still is a top notch sculptor, especially when it comes to highly anatomical sculpts.

I'm sure evangelising comes in many different forms. Violent coercion has its place, as does aggressive pamphleting!

    2. Honestly, when looked at in and of themselves, the Orks from that era are still fine. Brian Nelson has always done good work, too. They only really look weedy when you put them next to the ones that came after.

    3. The Brian Nelson ones are still great, I agree. Those skinny Colin Dixon boyz and yoofs aren't as good though.

    4. But surely Orks come in all shapes and sizes in the same way humans do? I personally like the skinny orks, they make me think of the youngest orks, freshly sprouted from their underground fungal hatchery-thing and ready to start down their path of face-smashing and squigg eating. :)

    5. I have no issue with skinny orks, I just am not that keen on those sculpts :)

    6. The skinny ones do make good yoofs, if you're playing a system where those are an option. They don't really work mixed into a mob of modern day Boyz, tho.

  3. Still loving the understated style of this lot. The use of the mutie torso is sweet! It got me adding a bunch of Gorkamorka figs to my watch list as though I have funds to afford them and space to store them unpainted for the next 10 years....

    1. Thanks Dai! I'm doing my best to steer clear of horns and tentacles in favour of lumpy, bumpy misfits. The muties really are great sculpts!

  4. I love Paul Muller's sculpts! His Ghouls are still the tops; best ones GW have ever produced, hands down.

  5. That heavy stubber is excellent, and the muties are just the right level of ick. (you should see what Kort and Oskar have under that normal seeming outward appearance)

What is next? More mooks with autoguns, or some close combat types?

    1. I suspect their suits cover a range of unpleasant growths!

There are 3 remaining needed for my starting cult; two cultists, one with a long rifle and one with an axe/hand flamer plus a disciple with a chainglaive.

    2. Oh, and the demagogue himself of course!

  6. The mutie heavy gunner is really cool.

  7. So cool. I love the subtleness of the whole scene, how you blended them and made all look part of the same cult. You are cult-ivating a nice band there!

    1. "Cult-ivating". Clever! :)

Paint scheme goes a long way to thing them together, but I also considered long and hard which models to use. There are others which didn't make the cut because their look wasn't quite right - to me at least!

  8. It's fun how a little shift in PoV changes everything, making those look "mean" rather than "evil" makes them way deeper as individuals in my view. I like that.

    1. Mean, desperate and slightly pathetic. I reckon those are perfectly justifiable reasons for turning to chaos!

  9. Great project. I'm not very familiar with the Gorkamorka figure range.

    1. Thanks Sean. The Gorkamorka range has some real gems in it, notably the ork characters and muties (in my view). Well worth checking out.

  10. Nice additions to the cult. I wished I'd kept my Gorkamorka stash especially the Digga's.
