Visage, Duchess of the Sutters - New Brat Leader

Tomorrow night is the first game of our new Necromunda campaign set in the settlement of White Spider Junction. As mentioned a few weeks back, I'll be using my Brat gang, counting as House Escher.

I had intended to use Beau Rouge (the unreleased Brat leader) as my leader for this campaign, but eventually decided that his combat orientated weaponry meant he was better suited as a champion. With Beau duly demoted, I needed to make a new leader with a bit more role flexibility - that's where Visage comes in!

Visage has come to usurp Beau Rogue as the prima donna of the Sutter Dukes. Known as the Duchess of the Sutters, she is at the forefront of fashion, with teaming ribbons and silks, and accompanied by her miniscule caryatid Wailer-of-Things.

Like her fellow Brats, Visage is clad in gaudy jade and white, with splashes of pink and orange.

I made Visage from the Citadel limited edition LE15 Kinky Chaosette. I removed both arms at the elbow, replacing the right with a Sisters of Silence bolter arm, and the left with an Escher stiletto sword. I sculpted some sleeve details on the upper arms to hide the cut marks.

Visage's jacket was made from a piece from an Adeptus Mechanicus skitarii coat, which I blended into her back with more greenstuff.

As for her little caryatid - I sculpted him almost entirely from greenstuff. The wings were sculpted over a small piece of shaped plasticard to add some structure. Believe me, sculpting that teeny face was a really frustrating process (I lost several tiny balls of greenstuff trying to make his eyes!). I think it came out OK in the end!

All in all, I'm very pleased with the result - she is clearly higher ranking than her gang-mates and looks suitably imposing and eye-catching!

    1. Will the weapon of choice be 'hairdo'?! Thanks JB!

    2. We can settle on close combat if voguing and hairstyles fail.

    3. Perfect. Catwalk face off first, crude hand to hand later!

  2. Lovely conversion work and painting.

  3. Caryatid is very good. If you are having trouble with eyeballs, try using nail beads. (Little pots of tiny spherical beads that people glue on their nails). Can be stuck to the end of a damp pin and the n pressed into the putty.

    1. Thanks for the tip! That's a great suggestion - I'll give it a whirl.

  4. Tremendous work! The sculpting on the caryatid is great, and adds a sort of whimsical quality to the figure.

I am also pleased that I recognized all the components before you identified them.

And the nail beads are great for rivets and the like too. just be aware that for our purposes they are frustrating to handle and vary significantly in size.

    1. Thanks! I'm a huge fan of models with little pets and the like. I think in this case it also really helps reinforcing the setting.

I'll bear the warning on the nail beads :)

    2. The size variation can be useful - you can deliberately pick a large or small one. A damp tool is definitely easier than picking them up with tweezers.

  5. Oh, she is perfect! I love the colour palate you've used on her - and the rest of the Brat Gang.

    1. Thanks Tim! I'm pretty pleased with how gaudy they all look, although if I was to paint them again I'd probably drop the orange from the scheme!

    1. Thanks Kym! I figured at that size, gesture was more important than detail. Mind you, I'm disappointed that his wings hide his carefully sculpted buttock cleft ;)

  8. She certainly has presence! Superb job on the conversion, and the caryatid is just the perfect touch.

    1. Presence is certainly a pre-requisite for a good leader model I reckon! Thanks.

  9. O my goodness, this has to be one of my fav's of your conversions ever!
She looks fabulous and fits in with your gang perfectly. SO NICE to see the Caryatid too - far too few of them in the official Necromunda range. (ie - none if memory serves)

    1. You're absolutely right Dai, no caryatids produced officially (yet). They're a fun little addition to the setting I think. Glad you like her - she's going to be a hard act to follow!

  10. stunning work! great little additions that really add a lot of character to that wonderful mini

    1. Thanks Blue! My theory is that every little addition pulls the figure further from its original look. Obviously I could have done more here (removing the armour elements for example), but I think the trick is to do enough, but not too much!

    1. Thanks! Seeing WIP shots is something I really like with other people's work, so I try to remember to do it!

  13. Wow, it's amazing. It's both iconic (in a classic, recognizable way) and fresh. That's not easy to achieve. Congrats!

    1. You say the nicest things! I guess a new interpretation of a classic figure can manage being both iconic and fresh. Thanks Suber.

    1. Thanks Evo! The little idiosyncratic elements on the original model like the neckbow help her to fit with the brat models I reckon. Glad you like the little fella :)

  15. This figure is amazing! Another conversion that I would swear was cast that way if I didn't see your build pictures. The familiar is the most impressive part to me. Well done.

    1. Trying to integrate the elements is the key thing I think. If you can make them interact or overlay them, it really helps sell the assembly. Cheers!

  16. To me that big bow is very character defining, going something like "look at me, I have a soft side too, then WHAM BAM THANK YOU MA'AM. Great sculpted additions too and I love the final look.

    1. Yeah, the bow suggests that maybe she enjoys herb liqueurs whilst relaxing at a bohemian joint on the weekend! Everyone has to take time off I guess!

  17. That's a nice touch with the Sister of Silence Bolter.

Are you tempted to similarly Necromundafy up the limited edition brother piece, the LE Warlock?

    1. That's an interesting suggestion. A figure I don't own and am not immediately sure how I could adapt it. One to think about perhaps.
