Stargrave Bestiary: Warbot / Rogue Trader Robot

Rogue Trader robots are such brilliantly fun models, with their eccentric configurations and wide variety of styles. The bubble-bodied Castellan with its 'Lost in Space' vibes is my favourite, and I've wanted to include one in my deep space salvage crew for a while. It matches the aesthetic of the LE01 power armour troopers brilliantly, with the rounded shapes and big 'R' (for robot?) that mimics the 'P' and 'A' on the troopers.

As the Stargrave bestiary necessitates a warbot (a large robot with multiple shooting attacks), I decided to kill two birds with one stone and paint up a RT robot for the salvage crew and act as a warbot should I roll one up on the Stargrave encounter chart.

The Castellan is a reassuring addition to the crew!

Paint-wise, the Castellan was painted up in the same way as its crewmates. Somewhere in the process I made a slight error (I think I got the order of the washes back to front), so he's an ever so slightly brighter orange than the rest of the crew. I don't really think it matters though!

I wanted to add a little nod towards the fantastically patterned Rogue Trader robot colour schemes, so the Castellan got some nice blue and white checks on his right power glove. I didn't do it on the left one because a) RT schemes were full of asymmetry, and b) I really didn't want to go through the hassle a second time!!

With a coat of gloss varnish on the black visor, the Castellan was ready to go!

  2. Never had one of these back in the day and I have to say it's a lot smaller than I'd imagined. He fits in very nicely with the team though, I think his shade of orange being just off from the team's actually fits better than if he matched exactly.
O, and you're a mad man to try to paint (And do a great job too btw) those checkers on that lumpy glove!

    1. It's funny how a mental picture of something you've only seen in a picture varies from the reality. Like you, I always thought the robots were bigger, ogryn-sized!

Glad you approve of the colour variation and checks!

  3. I love it. You've used your trademark chipping and weathering technique to deftly get arounf the "looseness" of the sculpt too!

    1. Thanks Curis! If there was ever a sculpt that lended itself to a quick paint scheme full of shortcuts, this was it!

  4. Tying the scheme in with your crew makes loads of sense. I like how the robot visor ties in with the power armoured troopers.

    1. Cheers cheetor! The helmet / head configuration really helps reinforce the aesthetic - far more so than any other RT robot class that I could have used.

  6. Adding of the spots of greens to the overwhelming orange was a great touch!

    1. They were quite a late addition - I felt the scheme was a little flat and just needed some lifting.

  7. Looks great, and really fits with the team. Like the power fist accent. Now I need to get work done and finish my robot... who’s been base-coated over a year now...

    1. Thanks Hobbs. The temptation was to go for full RT stripes and checks which would have driven me insane on a model full of curved surfaces! :D
