The Data Kings - Tech Gang Launched

The Data Kings look to blast their way out of an ambush by The Maniaks

I've managed to paint up another pair of Tech gangers, to take my total up to 10. This is actually sufficient for my planned gang for the Necromunda event in a few weeks time. You'll also notice that I've swapped in a couple of different figures (the other figures will still get painted, but I've altered my list a little).

The biggest change to the list is that I've swapped out a plasma gun in preference for a heavy stubber. This was predominantly driven by an idea for the conversion - I liked it so much that I fast-tracked it in favour of the still WIP plasma gunner. In order to include the heavy stubber, I had to lose a boltgun. Happily I had a nice Marauder Tech ganger with a lasgun, so he came into the starting line-up.

Champion Durango is inadvertently a clone of Cyborg!

The painting is nothing new - exactly the same approach as the other Techs to date. Durango with his heavy stubber had more protective leather clothing on show than most of the other Techs, as well as a higher proportion of armour and bionics. I don't mind that - it's probably a status thing for Techs.

Ganger Sperry is probably the most understated of the Marauder Techs. He's completely unmodified - he has minimal gear, largely comprising the shoulder scanner and a bizarre additional barrel with an electricity warning symbol on his lasgun!

Durango however has had a significant makeover. My starting point was the Chainsaw Warrior with reaper gun:

I carefully cut away his left leg, replacing it with a modern Space Marine bionic leg from Forgeworld. I then sculpted his chest armour and apron, removed his hair and then resculpted the visible scalp. I also added the visor and cranial ports, as well as a couple of other details to tie him in with the rest of the Techs.

The gang to date is starting to look pretty good I think. Nice, neat, crisp workwear for specialist tech activities. A few exotic guns. Plenty of bionics!

I'm looking forward to seeing how they fare in a few weeks time.

  1. Looking good. I have those other two Chainsaw Warrior miniatures on that catalog page. I have been thinking about using the blaster guy as an Imperial Guard officer...still considering it actually.

    1. They're nice figures. I reckon they're great as Imperial Guard or even just mercenaries.

  2. That conversion is ace! I didn't notice the leg right away. well done. Durango is a great name, and he towers above the others which denotes his leadership. ;)

    1. Thanks Grover! He was fun to cobble together. I shied away from a more complicated bionic arm replacement in favour of something simpler!

  3. I loved that chainsaw warrior set when I was a kid. I bought it, then sold it years later, then bought them back again many years later. Then, after looking at them closely, I realised how out of scale they were with the rest of the minis from that era. They're great minis mind, just huge!

Consequently I never got round to doing anything with them. But after seeing your conversion I think it may just be a case of "losing interest in a familiar sculpt". I think I may have another look at them.

Great job Axiom. Your warband is killa mate :)

    1. The chainsaw warriors are more in scale with marines than IG! I think you can mix them in as 'heavy' characters, in the same way that Necromunda heavies tend to be larger bulkier individuals.

      Glad you like them!

    1. Thanks! The heavy wasn't even originally planned! I have a plasma gunner waiting paint as the heavy stubber jumped the queue!

  7. That is a great conversion. Something about the glove of the original really says "tech", so your other added bitz just dial it up a bit.

    1. He had a good base of detail with the headset and all his gun accoutrements. I just tweaked him away from his militaristic origins :)

  9. This is such a brilliant gang! Love all the little touches you've got tying them together.

That Chainsaw Warrior is such a useful figure as Heavy Stubbers and Autocannons are so common in the early rules and army lists but are really rare in the official model ranges.

    1. It's slim pickings isn't it? Just the Chainsaw Warrior and the female Guard.

Thanks for the comments on the gang. I'm pretty pleased with how they all hang together.

  11. The game Chainsaw Warrior was simple fun, I too have these three, though after painting them when I was a teen (Awfully I might add), I stripped them a couple of years ago with the intention to repaint and add to some Inquisimunda warbands or something. (That of course I never got around to. Yet.) You always freak me out when I see you have cut up some of these golden oldies!

Regardless, I love these two new additions to the gang. Excited to see their first foray out into the Underhive!

    1. It's always a breath-holding moment when I start to cut up an old figure. Most of the time I think the results justify it, but there have been a couple of aborted disasters that were just destined for the bits box!
