The Frog with the Golden Gun - Slann Heavy Weapon

On Saturday I attended the excellent Lead & Steel Oldhammer show in Sheffield. Although not a huge show, it was really well organised with a lovely relaxed vibe. This was the 2nd year of running and featured a range of really lovely and eye-catching games including 2nd edition 40k, Blood Bowl, original edition Adeptus Titanicus and Necromunda. The event was also attended by a number of vendors including Mammoth Miniatures and Bad Squiddo. I didn't take any pictures - I was too busy chatting and rolling dice, but you can see plenty over at the event Facebook page.

I had planned to bring a Slann crew to use in Far Corfe - a large multi-player game based on the Necromunda ruleset. This would give me opportunity to field the event mini (Slann pirate L'ng Tchun Xlvr). I drew up a 1200pt gang list, only to discover that I was light on both points and firepower. What I really needed was a heavy weapon to bolster the small slann crew. My quick and dirty solution was to slap a plastic heavy weapon onto a fantasy slann. As time was tight, I forgot to take any pics of the unpainted mini, but at least you get to see the painted version!

I replaced the club with a plastic conversion beamer, having removed the chaos iconography.

He also got a holstered pistol from my bits box.

There was a tiny bit of sculpting required - the right shoulder pad under the conversion beamer, and a small pouch at the waist that isn't really visible in the above pics. Other than that, it was a really basic weapon swap that works pretty nicely due to the slann's pose.

Fantasy slann, Colony 87 mini & 40k slann shoulder to shoulder.

I like the resulting figure and will definitely see if I can make a second heavy weapon slann from similar bits. I think I need to find some time to paint up some more slann troopers too!

Of course the irony is, after painting this guy up in a rush, I didn't get to play Far Corfe as the table was over-subscribed. I played a great game of Adeptus Titanicus with Aidan from Warfactory Miniatures instead!

  1. Oh wow, I love the old Slann! I wish they had stayed in 40k.

  2. Have you considered using the Phrogg miniatures by Ral Partha?

    1. Yes - I picked some of the Phroggs up when they were first released on the KS. They're huge in comparison to the vintage slann though unfortunately. I'll probably use a couple as brutes, but they're too big really for my plans.

  3. Good work on the Slann. Heavy weapon works perfect with the pose.

    1. Thanks Suber! I just picked a weapon that is relatively uncommon 🙂

  6. I recognized that conversion beamer right away. You just don't see them much anymore. Great looking mini, hopefully your Slann team will get some table time in the near future.

    1. I suspect there are dozens out there on genestealer hybrids, but the metal heavy weapons seem to have been much more common. Glad you like it on the slann!
