Notorious Personages, Flyboys and Fuel

A selection of a few things I've painted recently!

Mayor Snakehand

The fabulous Curtis of Ramshackle Games was generous enough to sculpt, cast and distribute his own Mayor of Helsreach to attendees at BOYL last month. I chose to paint my copy as a rather sinister and self-important individual, fond of intimidating dark clothing!

The figure is a really fun sculpt, and I'm very much looking forward to using him as another addition to my growing collection of NPCs.

Racing Jetbike

I've already mentioned that I'd painted up a jetbike for the Jetbike Racing game at BOYL. You know, jetbike racing, like in Helsreach.

My jetbike was styled after racing motorbikes, complete with a natty livery and protective suit for the rider.

I hadn't really decided on the paint scheme, other than it needed to evoke motorsports and be bright and eye-catching. I certainly hadn't intended to paint the rider as an x-wing pilot, but that happened anyway!

The model itself is based on a motorbike I got from EM4 (possibly an old Grenadier bike). I kept the rider's legs, but replaced the torso with a torso from a Citadel Paranoia Security Guard. I removed the bike's wheels, and added in a little counterweight doo-dad, which is from the old plastic Space Crusade Scout heavy bolter that cheetor kindly donated.

Fuel Dump

I've had bits to make up a fuel dump for a little while now, but hadn't got round to painting them. Happily motivation hit, as I want to use the fuel dump as a plot point in a game in a few weeks time.

I wanted to get this set painted up quickly, so it was back to the favoured approach of base coating, before hitting the barrels with washes and sponged on weathering.

A selection of fuels and oils in a variety of barrels.

Citadel plastic barrels from the Munitorum Armoured Containers kit.

Covered barrel stacks from Micro Art Studios.

More barrels, again from Micro Art Studios.

All in all, I think I spent about 3 hours on throwing some paint at the fuel dump bits and pieces. I think they'll do the job!

  1. The Mayor sculpt is very nice indeed. The painting shows him off well.

    1. I think it's one of Curtis best sculpts to date. Glad you like him :)

    2. You tempted to get the weird snake version of the mayor as well? Or was that a one-off?

    3. I assumed that was a one-off conversion?

  2. I just painted up some of those barrels myself! Yours turned out nicely indeed.

    1. You can't beat barrels I think! I always could use more.

  3. Oh, I was so looking forward to seeing the process behind the bike! Wow, that's cool! Maj. Snakehead is indeed characterful too, I love what you did here!

    1. Thanks Suber :) I have got a second WIP bike that I intended to be a teammate. Just need to finish that too!

  4. You nailed my favourite colour scheme for the mayor so far. The jetbiker is also very nice, it's the one that actually beat me in the race (piloted by no other than Antipixi...)

    1. Thanks JB! The wine and black scheme was a bit of a departure for me :)

Of course the jetbiker won - small, fast and piloted by a maths savant ;)

  5. Curtis is a hero and you did a really nice job on the Mayor.

Scenery like that is very satisfying to work on, high throughput. They look bang on too.

    Great work all round.

    1. Absolutely, 14 pieces done in minimal time. They're fun to blast through and do the job on the table.

  6. Got my Mayor slightly painted, then broke hand. I'll finish him in a couple of months, when I'm able.

I like the dark cloak Axiom, he looks very sinister :) I agree too, one of Curtis' best sculpts so far! He will no doubt pop up in many a game.

    1. Oh no! A broken hand, right when you're mid-paint. Hope it's not too disruptive.

    2. Hahaha, I didn't break it painting him :D

But like I said, I'll be out of action for a few months :(

    3. Extreme painting is pretty dangerous I hear ;)

  7. That purple/yellow (gold) color scheme really fits the pompous official look for some reason. Good work on both the mini and terrain. :)

    1. Thanks! Dark rich colours suit higher ranking personalities I think. Something to do with expensive dyes perhaps?!

    2. Ahhh yes! The infamous purple dye for royalty.

  8. O my goodness, so much good stuff here!

    Smashing work mate.

  9. Seeing this in the flesh made me really crave the Paranoia Guards. I reckon their armour design was very heavily borrowed from for the Imperial Army and Squat ranges. Great job getting him on a jetbike!

Lovely job on the mayor too! What did you do to his base to get him on a 25mm Citadel slotta affair?

    1. Cheers Chris! I gave the rest of my Paranoia Guards to Graham. I'm wondering if I'll regret it ;) I like the padded smock style armour - it's a classic look.

I chopped and filed the Mayor's base by about 2mm I think. It was a faff, but I need my slottas!

    2. Yeah, I felt a pang of jealousy at that, but I'd got so many wondrous models that weekend it was easy to let go.

Glad the figure didn't shatter while you tried that. I'm tempted to stick mine on a 32mm mm and incorporate the integral base into the texture – I did it on the robed acolyte figures.

    3. If Graham doesn't use them, you can always attempt to prise them from his clutches :)

I was careful with the cuts!
