Brattish Behaviour - Painting the Giveaway Brat

In celebration of hitting my blog anniversary last month, you may remember I ran a bit of a competition to build and paint a Brat Ganger to the design of one lucky winner. Lasgunpacker was that lucky winner. His design brief for the figure was:

Lasgunpacker wrote: "As for the Brat... I think left hand chain sword right hand carrying a bag of some sort.

Colors: dark brown leather for the vest and boots, lighter leather colors for the other webbing and holster, pants and arms alternating checked harlequin colors, hair to suit your tastes."

I converted a chainsaw-wielding, bag-carrying Brat a week or two ago, and last night painted him up:

I've been referring to the figure as 'The Courier'...I imagine he's some kind of messenger for his gang - a competent loner who is able to look after himself. His slightly more muted gear (leather doublet and boots reinforces that look.

He does however have extravagent checkered shirt and trousers. It is the first time ever I've painted checks, and while it was time consuming, it wasn't as tricky as I'd feared. I used the technical pen and colouring in technique, which was fairly straightforward.

I'm not happy with the finish of some of the edge highlighting on the chainsword, so I need to go back and sort that out before I send the figure on to lasgunpacker.

The hairstyle deliberately draws from some of the Confrontation artwork and concept sketches. There are references to shaved foreheads and hairpieces worn on the back of the head. I quite like the result - still an exotic hairstyle, but perhaps less flamboyant and more in keeping with the character of the model.

Brats from rival gangs prepare to duel

The Courier has been surrounded by a menacing Guilder gang. Is there any escape?

  3. I don't want to add to the pain but he's one of my favourite's really; I reall y like his pale skin and leathers. His haircut almost makes him look like the doc in Back to the future but it really fits however.

Honestly that's one beautiful gift for Lasgunpacker, splendid work !

    1. JB...I'm kind of with you. In some ways this figure is a distillation of all the stuff I worked through when I made my Brat gang. In the event I ever repainted mine, I might try a scheme similar to this - I think it has a bit more subtlety to it :)

    2. Reapint? what a horrible word ! Yo have plenty enough of Brats to make 2 gangs of them or even 3 ! The Sutter Dukes are super cool and they would look more eye-catching than a whole gang of models like this new one. I think a big part of his charm is his sort of "outcast" vibe.

    3. Haha! The likelihood of me repainting anything is miniscule...and I do like the Sutter Dukes just as they are :)

  4. Love it! Although now I feel guilty making you part with it!

Very good work on the checks, which are done just so they look like fabric. Next you will be doing tartans. ;)

  9. Excellent work Jon. I too would find it extremely hard to part from it now. Like an unsure mother giving up her baby for adoption.
