The Biggest Axe - Venator Ogryn Brute

Most Necromunda gangs have access to one or more brutes - big muscular fighters that can be added to their crew. Venators don't have a gang-specific brute, but can field either of two universal brutes: an ambot or a servitor ogryn.

I quite fancied giving my Venators the option of having a big guy for the fun element (and the extra muscle of course). Given that I'm pretty far down the road of masked and hooded Venators, it seemed only fitting to follow the theme for their ogryn.

A strong hunting party of Venators enters the settlement, accompanied by a hulking ogryn.



The original Marauder Venators have a pretty distinctive sculpting style, and it seemed obvious that I should use a Marauder ogre as the basis for my ogryn.

I selected the bottom right Marauder ogre as the axe and outfit seemed to have most commonality with the Venators.

I spliced in the hood from a night goblin fanatic and sculped the hood transition areas. I also added exaggerated cheekbones and chin to make the face look more like a mask.


Servitor ogryns can be armed with an arc welder which can set opposing fighters on fire, so I adapted the axe by adding a Confrontation hand flamer connected to a fuel tank from an RTB01 space marine flamer. On the rear, he got some pouches (possibly ork?) and a noose to tie him in visually to the other Venators.


I painted him up exactly the same as the other Venators - grey clothes and khaki hood with a shiny metal mask.



As I was building him, I wasn't entirely sure whether he was a bit too comedic and ridiculous, but I think the sinister mask stops him from being too silly. At least I hope it does anyway! Either way, I think he fits in rather nicely alongside the other Venators.

I'm in serious danger of fawning over you like those sad acts do over John Blanche, but when you're turning out hit after hit I cant help myself

  5. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you're a dab hand at the GS skills Jon. That hood sculpting is really very good!

    Great modification on the halberd for sci-fi use too mate. It's fun making RT minis out of fantasy stock isn't it? A challenge, but still fun.

    1. Cheers Shane! I was pleased with the hood. It actually took 3 sittings - one to sculpt the collar, one to sculpt the rear folds, one to frame the face. A bit of faff, but worth it.

      The key with a fantasy > 40k conversion is working out which parts you can leave, and which you need to change. I was happy enough leaving his studded jerkin, but that halberd blade needed some attention!

  6. That's great use of the old puff-and-slash Marauder Ogres! Are you tempted to use any of the old Imperial Dwarfs to make Squat Venators?

    1. Cheers Curis! I honestly don't know about squad Venators - for a start you've done one miles better than I ever could! I also feel a little that squats might work better as their own thing, rather than a part of a mixed group. I've got some lovely squat pirates that I need to work on that might scratch that particular itch.

  8. Mindblowing concept. I simply hadn't even imagined a Venator Ogryn, and then blam! you just happen to produce such a masterpiece. The conversion work is not 'too much', it suits the theme and works in a way I could'n have imagined.

    1. Honestly, I don't think I'd considered a Venator ogryn until the game took me that route! I very nearly went with the Jes Goodwin executioner ogre, but so much of that model's detailing was barbaric, as opposed to the more refined outfit on this one! Cheers Suber :)
