Rogue Quest Level 6: The Bard

Recruitment continues for my sci-fi adventuring party, based on the concept of classic dungeoneering archetypes. After JB's crisp and clean Paladin, this week it's my turn yet again. And I've turned to my favourite 40k races and one of my very favourite models to represent the next addition - a bard.

I knew from the outset that a) I wanted a bard and b) I was going to make my bard of an elven bent. In a slight fit of concern, I watched closely as Alex over at Leadballoony revealed his very similar take on the bard archetype, but happily he chose a different model, leaving me free to continue as planned.

My selected model is Taal Spellsinger, a musician from the original 40k Space Elf / Eldar command group selection. Taal not only carries a rather exotic set of weaponry (hand flamer, katana), but also sports an even more exotic musical instrument in the form of a voice amplifier.

Taal's voice amplifier comprises a rather interesting helmet, teamed up with what looks like a set of organ pipes on his back. I originally painted him with a white helmet to match his white armour, but he ended up looking too much like a stormtrooper. Repainting the helmet blue also changed the focal point of the mini from all the pipes and details around his torso, to the all important music-making helmet.

I'm trying to link the models in the band through the use of colour - blue is my spot colour, used for the squat's hood, Taal's helmet and Dy-ana's dress trim / eye make-up. To a lesser degree, tan and yellow are also being used across the models.

My adventuring party is starting to take shape, with 50% of the planned models now complete. I'm still debating which model to paint next - I have a ranger and wizard primed and ready!

Things start to get nervy as Jebediah Corbain levels his laspistol as local crime bosses.
The start of a Space Elf pirate warband?

Taal can also hang out with some of the other Eldar characters I've painted up recently. Don't forget to tune into Leadplague next week for JB's next addition to his team.

  1. Lovely, the model is my favourite of the 3 eldar musicians and the colour scheme is just perfect for him. Your group and Alex's have something that mine lacks which is a visual bond between members. Just a discrete spot colour like you used or a uniform colourshceme like he did do give a strong visual coherence.
    Perfect group so far.

    1. I disagree with the lack of the visual bond between your 3 JB. All three models have grey/gunmetal. All three have glowing blue elements. All three have bright orange/red. They certainly look like a coherent group to me!

BTW, he's my favourite Eldar musician too!

    2. In all honesty, I just realised there are comon elements between them. I swear it was unconscious though ^^

    3. Serendipity? Coincidence? Pure chance? I guess your subconscious was working for you on that one ;)

  2. Lovely job mate - I was tempted by this fella but so glad I didn't mess it up for you, you've done such a cracking job with him! That blue is perfect, I love the clean white armour, and the detail on the katana is the icing on the cake

    1. Glad you like him. Your guy and mine should get together for a sing-song! I'd have happily done the harp fella if you'd done this one :)

    2. Haha - just need JB to produce a drummer and we've got ourselves a band!

    3. Then I'd love to see a band war between them and some Slaneeshi Noise Marines :D

Seriously, neat work, I love what you are doing here.

  3. Beautiful! Love the Eldar sorry space elves' musicians!
I was secretly hoping for a Kelos Longfinger (the harpist) but you've done a fabulous job bringing Tall Spellbringer to life, your work alongside Asslessman and Alex is very inspirational, I can see many copycat projects popping up in the blogosphere.
This is most inspirational, I hope you all keep the project going past the original classes and include retainers and animal companions or mounts!
    I'm not a weirdo.
    Congrats!

    1. Sorry it's not Kelos! I just like Taal a little bit more - he's a bit more exotic looking and therefore more interesting to me :)

Copycat projects would be great! I'd love to see others take on the concept.

  4. When I saw "bard" on the title of this post, I was hoping it would be an Eldar Musician. Glad to see I was not disappointed. I love this figure, and your paint job is just excellent.

This guy would make a great basis for a pirate too... just replace the hand flamer with something more potent, and the organ backpack with a cape or something.

    1. I agree - some tweaking and converting and he'd be a great pirate. Something about a scabbarded sword gives off exactly the right arrogance for a space elf pirate.

  5. Lovely stuff axiom. You have succeeded in bringing character to the minis.

    1. Thanks! That's great to hear, as that's the key aim of the project :)

  6. Truly beautiful work on that eldar - such soft colours! But what really caught my eye was that Elric Kinslayer conversion. Now that is what I call modelling. Just looking at him makes me what to listen to some Hawkwind.
