Interstellar goods inbound - Spacelords starship crewman

Reg 'Pops' Dwight has worked as ground crew for the Orange Star Line for 36 years. He started his career as a lowly baggage monkey, before launching on a steep trajectory that now sees him employed as Senior Steward (Stowage). 'Pops' Dwight is responsible for all incoming small goods from Orange Star Line vessels - it is his role to check and track, liaise with onwards hauliers or end customers, and, most importantly, ensure that local import taxation is applied at least accurately, preferably inaccurately - in the Orange Star Line's favour.

This newest addition to my growing collection of incidental and non-combatant figures is again from the Mega Miniatures Spacelords line, now in production with Moonraker Miniatures. This figure comes from the Starship Crew set, along with the pilot I painted up the other week.

In my view, this chap and the pilot are great figures, while the other figures in the crew aren't quite as nice sculpts. But, as was pointed out to me earlier, they are very good value and well worth picking up for your spaceport.

'Pops' uses the same palette as the pilot, but with the colours pretty well shaken up, blue being the dominant colour rather than white. I painted up the little badges on his uniform as insignia - one in echo of the Star Trek Federation badge, and the other randomly as a number. I also attempted to give him an older skin tone, by mixing a pale grey into the base flesh colour and highlights. It may not show in the photos, but even so, the figure has a great craggy face.

Overall, I think he fits the bill nicely and will be a useful addition to the collection. If you haven't checked out the Spacelords range already, I strongly suggest you do so!

  1. Great work on this background character. Once can easily imagine that the position of Senior Steward (Stowage) has plenty of opportunities for... off book personal enrichment.

    1. I suspect it's all done with a nod and a wink, greasing the wheels of the interstellar freight trade. And who really worries too much if the odd case of Talaxian herbwine is 'lost' in transit? ;)

  2. Very cool - I love what you're doing here mate. I did pick up a few from this range after seeing the pilot that you did... there's some cool stuff to be had! Thanks for the tip-off

    1. Thanks! Bizarrely, doing individual figures rather than armies has increased my output ten or twenty-fold. I just like doing these interesting characters I guess.

Great you've found some Spacelords figures to suit you too :)

    1. Thanks Suber. Much to my embarrassment, I don't really have a proper spaceport for him yet, but that will come :)

  5. Yeah, those old Metal Magic sculpts are pretty cool. I kinda feel sorry for the original company, coz they didn't get nearly enough publicity when they were released, and consequently didn't sell.

Fast forward twenty odd years -plus the internet- and their finally getting appreciated. Must really irk the original owner. But at least their getting noticed now though.

Great job on this new addition Axiom :)

    1. It's a shame they weren't more popular originally, as they're a great range, and perfectly compatible with Rogue Trader figures. That's the trouble with pre-internet mail order companies. I know I wasn't aware of them at the time, and to be honest, ordering from abroad was a real pain anyway (hence why I never bought any Armorcast stuff in the early 1990s).

  6. What Suber said! :) Orange and blue always work well together. Love the group shot at the end too.
