Mech + Tech Services - An Underhive Workshop

Back in May and June 2020, I went through a flurry of building some fun buildings out of old Necromunda bulkheads. In July 2020, I build a little workshop, then did nothing with it!

I discovered it in a box during a bit of a tidy up over the weekend, so decided to do a quick paintjob and get it ready for use.

The workshop is made from 6 Necromunda bulkheads. I have opened up 3 of the panels and inserted some textured plasticard to look like roller shutter doors. The roof has been elevated using some bulkhead ladder sections discarded from earlier builds to allow a bit of light and ventilation into the workshop!

The air handling unit on the roof comes from either the recent GW Rogue Trader box set, and everything else is made from scraps of plasticard or strip.

After all the enclosed buildings, I very much wanted this one to be open for game play - plenty of line of sight and movement opportunities. I can easily close those up with some scatter terrain in the workshop if I want.

The painting was quick and dirty again. I added a few posters and signage for some visual interested. I also forgot to take any pictures of the painted workshop in isolation, so you'll just have to do with it nestled amongst some of my other buildings!

My favourite part is this little toolbench in the interior.

I'm glad to get this one out of the WIP pile and into the box of painted terrain, ready for a future gaming opportunity!

  1. This is so corking. I love the red shaded with the verdigris. Is it salt weathering, or sponging?

    1. Thanks Curis! The process is essentially spray black, zenithal spray grey, stipple red with a big stiff brush, drybrush with a khaki-brown, throw on some washes and rust streaks. From start to finish, including the posters and detailing, this took about 1.5 hours. I could go back and paint more detail, but it's 'good enough' as is I think!

  3. That fits in perfectly with the rest of the buildings you've done for the setting. As always mate, great job.

  4. I love the way you build these pieces. The plasticard additions look always so natural; you manage to give the whole thing a sense of coherence, it's simply fantastic

    1. Thanks Suber. It's fun to work out how a boxy building might function, and to layer the details to help convince that it works!

    1. Thanks. There's bound to be a million little workshops for all the low-level metal bashing to take place :)

  6. These buildings are fantastic, and I think this shop makes the perfect cornerstone to any area of the underhive.

I've searched for my own stack of bulkheads about 4 times now. Your superb work is urging me to to go check storage in my parents house...

    1. Thanks! I was tempted to fully model it, but figured that just a few items would be enough to sell the story.

  8. I don't know what I hate you more for... your miniatures or your terrain! I certainly drool over both!

  9. A quick paintjob it may be but it looks great in terms of detail and execution.
