The Priestess and the Guard

Back in 2016 Michael Anderson sculpted me a fantastic set of sci-fi civilians for my fledgling Colony 87 range (now available through Crooked Dice). One of my very favourite figures from the range was High Priestess Cardinia. On a completely unrelated matter, in July 2017 Warlord released a limited edition alien mercenary for their Gates of Antares range. The figure is now freely available to purchase through the Warlord website, but in 2017 the only way to pick the figure up was to attend the Antares open day in person. Both figures have been sat in my boxes for years, just waiting for some paint!

I decided that the two unrelated figures might work nicely as an astropath and her enigmatic xenos bodyguard. With complimentary paint schemes, I think it's worked out, in spite of the completely different styles.

High Priestess Cardinia is a lovely diminutive sculpt, complete with a pet felid. I steered away from the bottle green I've used on many of my other astropaths' robes for a bit of variety.

Senior astropaths commune over a concerning transmission.

The alien bodyguard (who I imagine is both silent and nameless) got a lovely deep blue-green skin colour, contrasted with the magenta cloth. The sculpt has a lovely pose, but I confess there are parts that are difficult to interpret - the angular physique blends into armour and straps in places!

Alien bounty hunters stalk their quarry through the slums.

Another pair of long overdue models finally finished, plenty more to go!

  1. Very nice indeed. I didn't realise you were behind Colony 47! I wasn't sure about the big alien guy when I first saw him, but I think your paint scheme really makes him work.

    1. Thanks Toby! Yeah, I started Colony 87 a few years back after trying and failing to source nice sci-fi civilians. Crooked Dice picked up the range and have taken it on to bigger and better things since though!

  2. A lovely pair indeed. The priestess is a wonderful sculpt and you've sold the bodyguard very well. I suspect you're right, that it is a quite different style. But your palette and painting style bring them together so seamlessly I'm not sure I'd have even thought about it if you hadn't mentioned it. Well done!

And I'm glad to see the Colony 87 range growing and prospering over at Crooked Dice.

    1. Thanks, really pleased to hear that you think they work as a pair in spite of their obvious differences!

Crooked Dice is doing brilliant things with the C87 range. I'm loving the stuff in the recent Kickstarter.

  3. Fantastic colors on these two models. I absolutely love the pair of small but powerful Astropath and her large and imposing loyal bodyguard. They look great together! As I said on FB, now you have me looking into the Gates of Antares range which I had previously missed.

Side note: Just ordered the original C87 range as an addon to my KS. I'm looking forward to them and the other models I have coming!

    1. Thanks Hobbs! I quite like a bit of physical contrast between models.

I find the Gates of Antares range a bit hit and miss, but there's loads to look through.

  4. Amazing work !

I really enjoy the colors (and stance)of the bodyguard, plus the contrast in bulk between the two miniatures works really well.

  5. You are the force behind C87!? Interesting to know. Is there an US based seller for that range? Those shipping costs from the UK are a killer!

Both characters in this post are lovely. The choice of green and burgundy work well together.
Priestess tho needs to be wary of the Inquisition, doubt they’d suffer the presence of a hulking xenos, registered bodyguard or no!

    1. I started the C87 range, but sold it on to Crooked Dice a couple of years ago. I'm not directly involved any more, so you'd have to get in touch with Crooked Dice directly about US distribution.

Glad you like the two figures. I totally agree, anyone consorting with some kind of xenos is on dangerous ground!

  6. These are excellent! I recently touched up my priestess- she's probably my favorite of all the Colony 87 gigs so far. Now I need to paint the alien guy who's been sitting in a box for a few years now. Your colors for him are inspiring.

    1. Thanks Clarke, she's one of my favourites as well! I really like the pinky tones that of the studio paint job on the Togg, but I wanted something richer and stronger in colour for mine 🙂

  7. Beautiful! Of course the Priestess is delicate and elegant, and that makes a striking contrast with the bodyguard. I find it fabulous!

  8. All that whispering in your ear about BtGoA has born fruit. Tee hee hee.

I really like the combo of dark turquoise and purple – it gives the lad a strong late G1 Decepticon vibe.
