Another pair of slann to add to my warband. This time it's a combat specialist accompanied by a rather more brutish slann! Mixtecas is a converted Warhammer Fantasy slann, and his larger companion is a Phrogg from Ral Partha Europe.

The Phroggs were a range launched by Ral Partha via Kickstarter back in 2015 and now available on the RPE website. At the time, they created a bit of a buzz with Rogue Trader fans. I backed the Kickstarter hoping for some new troops to mix with my vintage slann, but was ultimately disappointed that the figures came in at 42-45mm rather than the 25-30mm of the RT slann. I was also put off that some of the sculpting seemed pretty crude.
That said, I dug out my Phroggs after Gretchin mentioned them in a comment to one of my posts a week or so back. I figured one ogre-sized slann would be a nice addition to the crew if I could overcome the sculpting issues. The flamer trooper has the nicest pose and detailing to my eyes - I like the added bulk from the fuel tanks. I did want to address a couple of issues before painting him: eyelids; loincloth; weapon; texture.
The original flamer nozzle seemed a little low-tech for slann, so I removed it and added a few bits of plastic strip and a doo-dad from my bits box to tech it up.
After a bit of paint, Tzunx looks the part of a hulking over-sized slann!
Although there are a couple of space slann with pistols and axes, I wanted a bit more variety in the combat stakes. I plan to do a couple more like Mixtecas, who is just a Warhammer Fantasy slann with added bits.
I added some detail to his fancy cricket bat, plus a pistol, shoulder pad and a few decorative elements. The shoulder pad and fur trim was basically a copy of the detail on Sschoi from the RT range. Those Kroot shoulder pads are very handy for this kind of thing!

Loving the large one! A great addition. This project has been very fun to follow mate.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dai! I always like a big brute in a warband, although I wish the phroggs had been sculpted at 28mm human rather than ogre size. They'd be a lot more flexible.
DeleteGreat work on these. They do bring a nice variation to the warband.
ReplyDeleteBill.
Thanks Bill!
DeleteThat's great! Even if you told I wasn't really aware of the size of that fella until I saw the final pic. Cool!
ReplyDeleteYeah, he's a big lad all right!!
DeleteGreat job, the Phrogg fits in very well.
ReplyDeleteThanks Rob!
DeleteThey're awesome! Your sculpting job really helps them pop out of the original minis.
ReplyDeleteThanks very much! Mainly little adjustments, but it all helps 🙂
