BOYL 2017 (Part 1) - Shadow War: Armageddon at Warhammer World

With what now seems like it's a tradition, myself and a group of fellow gamers headed to Warhammer World on Friday just past as an appetiser to the annual Oldhammer event 'Bring Out Your Lead', hosted by Wargames Foundry in Newark.

The Friday meetup at Warhammer World provides us with a different vibe, an opportunity to play some subtly different games, and a chance to meet with Nottingham-based folks who aren't able to make it to the main event over the weekend.

Antipixi refreshes himself of the rules.

This year we planned to run a mini-campaign of three (or four) linked Shadow War: Armageddon games. With potentially up to 13 players (in actuality we hit a peak of 9) we split into two factions - evil-doing bad guys and law-keeping good guys.

Cheetor and Erasmus Papafakis check a vital rules query.

The Good Guys:
Comprising Paul aka cheetor with a team of Arbites, Colin aka Whiskey Priest with his Ordo Xenos Inquisitor, Chris aka antipixi with his Sisters of Battle and Chris aka Curis with his Mercenary Pirates. The good guys were also bolstered for a round by Andy from Tales from the Maelstrom with yet another Inquisitor.

The Bad Guys:
You'll have seen my Ratling Kill Team. It turns out those little guys are renegades! I was also joined by Shane aka Erasmus Papafakis with his Eldar Pirates, JB aka Asslessman with his Hive Nobles and Graham aka Greater Harlequin with his Piscean Mercenaries.

Like an idiot, I forgot to take any photos of the individual Kill Teams, and very few in-game photos. Below are the ones I did take!

Whiskey Priest checks out lines of sight on the Mining Facility 42 board.

Ratlings advance!

As do their Hive Noble allies.

Space pirates charge across the gantries.

Rival Inquisition forces jostle for supremacy.

Little guys get unfairly beaten up!

But some of the little guys are pretty tough!

Piscean Warriors advance through the industrial sector of the Red City.

In order to keep games loosely themed, we applied the same subplots to each round. We also allowed the use of a free Special Operative to each player in game 2 (although my arco-flagellant and Whiskey Priests Deathwatch Marine both died without inflicting any damage or positively influencing the game in any way!).

After a full and fun day of gaming, which included brief cameos from our US friends Tom (airbornegrove) and Chris (Bulldog Lopez), we headed out into the bright lights of Nottingham for pizzas and beer. And of course, in anticipation of BOYL across Saturday and Sunday.

  1. Already a fond memory :)

I felt that I had in many ways already justified the trip after the Friday gaming.

It was great fun to get some miniatures on the bespoke Warhammer World Hive World terrain.

    1. Gaming at WHW is a very different experience than BOYL at Foundry. Both are great, particularly when the company is excellent :)

    2. Bless.

I do agree. I had fun at Warhammer World without needing to go to the bar for three pints first.

    3. But you did need the pints for fun at BOYL?

    1. Really pleased you enjoyed it. It would have disappointing if you'd made the effort and been underwhelmed!!

Looking forward to the next time already :)

    1. We can't claim credit for the table! It's a treat to play on some of the WHW theme tables though.

  10. Thanks for organising the games! And doing the prep and write ups before hand. Your handouts will forever have a place in my SWA book as a bookmark.
