The Big Lad - Sarjent Blas Gaspar

As any noble is aware, a loyal bodyguard is pretty much a pre-requisite. Yes, you certainly need a number of anonymous household troops to lay down firepower and march around noisily. Yes, you also need the slim, quiet dangerous retainer - the one with mis-matching eyes, a penchant for blades, and numerous advanced skills for removing unwanted people. But what you really need, is the kind of statement bodyguard that shows everyone who is boss. The big, heavily muscled brute who can crush skulls with his bare hands. The man-mountain who can absorb firepower without armour, and still keep on coming.

A bodyguard like Sarjent Blas Gaspar, in fact.

This figure has been on my 'to do' list for well over 12 months. I wanted a big guy to accompany Lord Greiss, and this figure fits the bill.

Sarjent Blas Gaspar is clad in the yellow and blue livery of House Ulanti. He has been rewarded for loyal service with a bionic leg (albeit a crude one), and a terrifying power maul.

Lord Greiss with his loyal bodyguards.

Sarjent Blas Gaspar and Eduardo Murat hunt down a merchant who foolishly owes money to Ulanti.

The model itself is converted from a variety of sources. The legs are space ork bionik legs. The torso was provided from an old 1980s Citadel Lord of the Rings Dunlending model. The pouches come from the RTB01 Space Marine kit, while the hand flamer comes from the Confrontation weapons sprue. Finally, the er, big, shiny maul is from the Dark Angels Ravenwing Command kit.

I deliberately kept the fur covered shield and tribal elements on the figure - the 'techno-savage' is a look I'm fond of, and there's plenty of precedence for it in a Necromundan / Rogue Trader setting.

After a little bit of greenstuff to cover the join, Sarjent Gaspar was ready to go!

  1. Well not only is the conversion excellent along its paint job but it's also given us plenty of occasions o laugh already. Thanks for all these reasons.

    1. Thanks! The laughs are the most important. I suspect he'd be completely bewildered as to why there was anything funny ;)

  2. Yes, that is a thug. That he wears the lord's colors and restrains his violence to approved doses does not remove the fact that under the veneer of civility he is a snarling thug, ready to break faces.

  3. I'm so accustomed to seeing conversions on your blog that now I play a little game of "what'd he make this guy from" every time I look at your latest post. Resisting the urge to scroll down straight away.....spoiling the surprise :)

I noticed the Ork legs, flamer, maul & pouches, but I'd never seen that torso before. His facial expression is really cool!

Great conversion as always Axiom :)

    1. I love the fact you play that game! It makes me smile to think of you wracking your brain to work out what I've used :)

      Glad you like him!

    1. He's a small-minded and vicious man, with the body of a brute. It's a terrifying combination!

    1. I think it's so ludicrous, it gets back to being serious.

      Glad you like him!

  6. The figure doesnt look like a conversion and captures the space/eunuch/bodyguard tropes beautifully.

    Brilliant.

    1. Thank you cheetor - saying it doesn't look like a conversion is the highest compliment you can give a jaded hacksaw wielder like myself!

No balls you reckon? Explains a lot!

  7. Great job on this guy, I love a good techno-savage type.

I think we can all agree that the figure designer of that particular piece of Dark Angel equipment knows bloody well what he was up to.

    1. It's just too obvious that Dark Angels really do explore their inner depths...

  8. He looks pretty dull-witted to me. I wonder if he's just a point and shoot (Ordered to charge) type? Don't expect him to use detective skills when dealing with troublesome types, work out how much to tip a waitress or eat with a napkin in his lap.

    1. I suspect that subtlety, complex decision-making and innovative thought are not his core skill-set!

  9. Great work in making his angry features come to life. That little bit of green stuff was also a good choice!

    1. Thanks! The greenstuff was mainly to disguise the join - otherwise it would have ended up with an obvious join line.

  10. Hey! This may sound odd, but I have been looking all over for the old Armorcast Bright Stallion, and I happened to come across your blog. In the article you wrote, do you own that model? and If so, would you part with it for a price? :)

    1. Hi James, thanks for getting in touch. Unfortunately the Bright Stallion isn't for sale. Good luck tracking one down.
