In pretty much the same frame of mind as
the last time I painted crates, I had a long day at work on Friday. However, as my wife was away for the evening, I didn't want to waste a painting session. I settled on painting something quick, easy and requiring minimal though - more crates.
I'm of the opinion that any gaming area cannot have enough of this kind of scatter terrain. It serves two purposes - cover for enhancing gameplay, and increased visual realism of the setting. So I pulled out a variety of crates from my pending box, daubed away!

The white crate is GW plastic, as is the canister. The orange one is resin - possibly Ainsty? |
The crates are a mixture of Games Workshop plastics from the Battlefield Accessories set, and resin pieces (mainly from
Daemonscape I think). I chose the same orange, white and blue colour palette I've been using for the
Orange Star Line corporation I've been assembling.
|
The rectangular ammo box is GW, the canisters and square blue crate are Daemonscape resin. |
The painting approach was exactly the same as my recent vehicles and earlier crates - base colour, wash, weathering with blister foam, done!
|
Two more Daemonscape crates with a pair of barrels from Zinge Industries. |
|
The whole group. Some of the items got some little warning labels - open with caution! |
|
The warehouse crew loaded up the latest shipment. |
Not bad for 2 hours worth of mindless painting in front of the TV!
You can never have enough scatter terrain. I've been meaning to paint that plastic cannister myself.
ReplyDelete'You can never have enough' seems to be the prevailing view :)
DeleteI love a good bit of scatter terrain! I have the GW set ready for when I start my board but I need more. I just checked out Daemonscape stuff, have not seen it before. Their cargo trawler looks like a cool addition i need to pick up!
ReplyDeleteDaemonscape have some great kits, very reasonably priced. They're not as detailed as modern plastic kits, but they're perfect for my needs!

ReplyDeleteThose are perfect.
I really need to tackle the similar bits that I have with the same approach.
I have had some of my unpainted crates for far too long.
I recommend doing it one evening when you have the urge to be productive, but can't be bothered. Like you though, some of these have been sat waiting for paint for some years!
DeleteVery nice indeed!
ReplyDeleteThanks :)
DeleteGreat. I think all the little details are greater than the sum of their parts. I'm sad that I had to pass on the Astropolis kickstarter, but I've over done kickstarter and ebay this year and can't find time to paint, let alone space to store, all that I have.
ReplyDeleteGreat result, and like the others said, scatter terrain is perfect for giving terrain a "lived in" look. (plus giving cover to your, lets just say "less forward" gang members)
ReplyDeleteThat's one thing my terrain collection doesn't have nearly enough of - scatter terrain.
ReplyDeleteVery nice pieces. Little labels, etc here and there really make them pop.
In 2 hours these look great. Not only in tabletop gaming terrain but they would look good in dioramas too.
