There's something about big civilian sci-fi vehicles that really appeals to me, and it's been a lot of fun working on my Ash Wastes salvage vehicle which I finished off the last few touches earlier. Very little has changed from the build. I essentially sprayed it with a yellow car spray before weathering it within an inch of its life!
I used my tried and tested blister pack foam and washes over the yellow base coat. There was a point yesterday when I was worried I'd gone too far, and ended up with a distress chunk of resin which was impossible to work out what was what.
I sought some feedback, and was advised to add markings and try and break up the colour, so in came the white infill panels, the big '2' decal, hazard stripes and a few other little touches.
The small additions did enough (hopefully) to make it visually readable and still beaten up and thoroughly abused!
I may still yet go back and add more dirt to the tyres, but for now they'll do. |
I've kept the curved area as a sort of view port. |
Various decals to represent warning signs / vehicle designation. |
It's a pretty big beastie! |
"So that will be 360 creds for the repairs back at the shop, and 7,000 creds for the tow. Don't like it? See how long you last out here - there's a storm coming." |
I'm looking forward to using the vehicle in my games, and I suspect it might be shown in the background of a fair few scenic shots too!
I'm in love.
ReplyDeleteWho'd have thought battered sci-fi industrial vehicles were the way to your heart?! ;)
DeleteFantastic. It's the little insignia and details that make it more believable as a hard working vehicle.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever put as many decals onto a vehicle, but I think you're right, it really helps sell the look.
DeleteI've recently bought some printer transfer paper, I'm about to give it a try for my big-ass spacecraft. If it works out I'll make a blog post.
DeleteIf it doesn't I'll cry into my ruined printer...
I'd be interested to see the results. Fingers crossed!
Delete"Beep, beep, beep, this vehicle is reversing..."
ReplyDeleteNah, just move and anyone on foot had better be paying attention :D
DeleteI know the feeling all too well with weathering Jon. It's very easy to get carried away isn't it?
ReplyDeleteI think you saved it though, it looks pretty damn good, beaten up a lot :) The advice you were given really helped!
Roll on the carnage in the wasteland.....this vehicles just screaming out to be used as a steam roller :D
Give me a little bit of foam and a blank expanse of vehicle, and I'm weathering at top speed!
DeleteI wonder if the wheels will be effective at grinding people into the wastes? I suspect they might just get pushed down into loose material. Uncomfortable nonetheless though :)
This looks boss!
ReplyDeleteThanks buddy!
DeleteThat is brilliant Jon - what a beast! Inspired use of parts, and I the weathering is perfectly imperfect. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteCheers Alex! I'm pretty pleased with the results :D
DeleteI guess paint touch-ups are not part of the ash wastes lifestyle? ;)
ReplyDeleteGreat work, and I look forward to hearing about it crushing/lifting some competition soon.
No, paint refreshing is too much hassle ;)
ReplyDeleteMan, I'm speechless. The finished product looks awesome. A big bravo!
ReplyDeleteGlad you like it! Looking forward to getting it in a game tomorrow night
DeleteAce!!!
ReplyDeleteAre the wheels from oldie LEGO set?
I think I had set with such parts long time ago (Blacktron?)
They are indeed Lego :)
DeleteNice work Jon.
ReplyDeleteThe motor pool is expanding nicely, we must get a shot of the garage contents all together at some point.
I'd quite like to build a shed to house them all too!
DeleteThanks Cheetor.
Excellent! very nice indeed.
ReplyDeleteGlad you like it :)
DeleteI know what you mean. Such vehicles have that weathered/used/realistic look that I believe made Star
ReplyDeleteWars what it is. Great job too by the way! :)
