The Grand Tour - Ash Wastes Dune Buggy (Take 2)

As you may have seen over at Leadplague or Sho3box, this year the WIPsters guaranteed each other at least one hobby related present this year, with a Secret Santa gift sharing.

My Santa recognised that vehicles have been a bit of a theme this year, and that I clearly needed more racers. I was therefore as excited as a 4 year old with a full stocking when I opened my present:

That's right - a mint in blister OOP Grenadier Future Warriors Lightning Strike Buggy!

You may recall that I painted one of these lovely little cars in the summer of 2016, but that one was missing a host of parts, including the front bumper, roll cage and driver. I also realise after comparing the two, that my previous version has two sets of rear wheels, instead of the smaller front pair.

Lightning Strike Buggy swiftly tacked together.

My plan was to build the new buggy unmodified, and to paint it with a contrasting colour scheme. I selected racing red, then weathered the paint job to hell and back!

In retrospect I wish I'd painted more definition between the red paintwork and rusty areas, but there's no going back now!

The white stripes were simply freehanded, whilst the numbers (to give it a racing feel) are decals.

And just for the sake of comparison, here's the two buggies side-by-side:

Of course, the real reason to have models like this in the first place, is so you can mock up little racing dioramas, right?!

...it's the final turn, Rick Nitro is holding the lead and the crowd go WILD!!!...

Thank you Secret Santa - a really enjoyable start to painting for 2017!

  2. Its the ace Crimbo jumper and haggard "the kids woke me at 3am" that stood out to me!

    1. We opened these on Christmas Eve, so the haggard look is pretty much in-built I think!!

  4. The world needs more dune buggies, I'm pretty sure they can bring peace in our time.

Also, I wish I could freehand lines that straight, excellent job!

    1. There's something about the image of a buggy cresting a dune at speed that evokes a deep sense of excitement in us all!

I usually have to neaten up straight lines a couple of times - I'm not one of those painters who has a steady hand and can do it first time!

  6. Nice of you to give us a gift too, by painting that buggy so quickly and putting it up here for us to see. ;)

Nice work on the rust, although there was so much of it that at first I saw it as dirt!

    1. Dirt or rust? I don't mind ;) As long as it looks beaten up!!

  7. I do love an anonymous scruffy vehicle model. Suitable as terrain and photo shoot prop in addition to gaming piece, they are surprisingly useful things.

It was a good idea to follow the (very sharp looking) painting stripes etc through on the second model. Its not quite the Italian Job, but its close.

A great start to the year :)

    1. Thanks cheetor! I'm growing very fond of having vehicles in the background of my scenery too!

Italian job you say? I need a blue one perhaps!

    2. A blue one would look fabby dab. If only someone could get me some measurements...

    3. I have supplied measurement now Crooksie, happy?! :)

  8. A great pressie & another cool buggy for the collection of Ash waste vehicles too!

I can't help but notice the "motors" on the back of the buggy seem to be just a couple of RC motors with some fittings hangin off them :)

    1. Thanks Suber! I think I can still improve the realism, but I'm happy with the results :)
