The best thing about a Mad Max style setting are the vehicles. And the coolest type of vehicle is a motorbike! I actually finished the second of my Maniax bikers a month or so ago, but never got round to posting him up. In game terms he's been hugely unsuccessful, failing to turn up on 3 out of 4 occasions. He's probably too busy seeking out new business opportunities for his paymaster.
This new biker was built from the chassis of the early 1990s Space Marine bike Mk II, with the addition of some handlebars from (I think) an old Grenadier bike. The rider is the Imperial Guard medic biker, with the head from a helmetless Rogue Troper and a Victoria Miniatures gasmask:
Both Outriders before they saw paint. |
Like the previous Outrider, this guy fitted the bill with all his pouches and equipment. I keep the colours pretty much identical, even down to the red stripe on the shoulder pad, mirroring the stripe on the other Outrider's helmet.
All I need now is a pillion rider with a gold helmet! |
I really love the heavy look of this bike, you really feel you can cross half a desert with it. I think it would have been worth making the hands fit a little more onto the handlebars but I know what a nightmare it can become, especially on a model meant to be played in a ongoing campaign.
ReplyDeleteHe's great.
It's definitely built to last. I wish I'd thought about the hands when I was building it - it never occurred to me (beyond the frustration that the they didn't quite look perfect. Oh well, they fit better than the medic rider ever did on his original Space Marine bike!
DeleteYou've done a stirling job on that rider fig. I have one in my bits box and it's such a pig of a sculpt to fit on anything it's sat for a decades after I sold the bike to a friend.
ReplyDeleteHope you get some sort of heavy black smoke effect to plonk behind the iron horse during games, can't imagine it would have anything but a nasty cloud of lung polluting crap following it around the game table. :)
I've always wondered if the medic was designed for a different bike than the one he ended up on. If he was sculpted specifically for the Marine bike, its not a good result!
DeleteBlack smoke is an excellent idea - I should make some :)
I think you must love bikes as much as I do (maybe almost as much, let's be real). If you're going to insist on doing such a good job on them, the only course will be to send you more to play with :D
ReplyDeleteThe irony is that over the years I've barely painted any bikes (unless you count Eldar jetbikes). We should have a bike meet, you and I ;)

ReplyDeleteWorth saying twice ;)
DeleteVery cool!
ReplyDeleteCheers!
DeleteYou should really do one with a side-car with some kind of machine gun mounted on it! ^^
ReplyDeleteVery cool bikers! <3
I really should!!
DeleteSweet work. The poses work wonderfully and I love the weathering on the bikes. Proper good stuff; I want to be in their gang.
ReplyDeleteTheir gang is a fun place to be. This evening they shot up some dino riders and stole some water ;)
DeleteLovely job mate - that chunky looking bike is perfect! I imagine that those tyres would allow it to cross dunes with ease :-)
ReplyDeleteI reckon it's the perfect rough terrain bike ;)
DeleteDefinitely born to be wild! :D
ReplyDeleteWho cares about scenic shots! Hot damn these looks good as they are! Fantastic work yet again!!!
ReplyDeleteI like the scenic shots :) But if you're happy, then its cool!
