Preparing for Logan's World - Confrontation Maniac Gangers

Following the recent conclusion of the Inquisimunda campaign I was playing in with my Eldar Void Pirates, one of the other guys posted this:

"I quite fancy doing a 40k/post-apocalyptic, rolling road vehicle combat campaign. You'd need around a dozen gangers and several trucks/cars with bespoke terrain. Anyone interested?"

Hell yes! And this isn't going to be just any old 40k/post-apocalyptic setting...its going to be Helsreach on Logan's World. If you're not familiar with the setting, then check out pages 224-228 of the Rogue Trader rulebook, and the fabulous Carl Critchlow illustrations:

Logan's World is a frontier planet, riven by conflicts between rival mining interests, slaver gangs and bandits.

The various rules for Ash Wastes combat in the Necromunda setting pretty much perfectly port across to Logan's World, building as they do on Gorkamorka.

My immediate gut feeling was that I wanted to represent a Water Seller with his bodyguard of mercenary fighters. As I started to think about vehicles, one obvious candidate came to mind, in the form of the uncompleted Ash Wastes Crawler I started back in 2014.

I then dug out a selection of old Citadel figures that I considered suitable as Mercenary fighters - some Confrontation Maniac gangers, RT adventurers and miscellaneous others:

A plan was formed - a large crawler with punk Mercenaries in the employ of a Water Seller. It was then a simple case of selecting the Journeyman gang from the Ash Wastes rules as the best fit.

With that settled, I decided to make a start on a couple of the figures - a pair of Citadel Maniac gangers.

I gave both a fairly muted colour scheme to fit in with the Mad Max-esque aesthetic. Both mercenaries have a white stripe across their eyes, as the Helsreach text in RT states that "mercenaries indicate their status by a white patch or band from eye-to-eye." This is variously illustrated as a bandanna or painted literally across the eyes.

Helsreach mercenary with white stripe across his eyes.

The two models were originally supplied with either the Confrontation bare plastic arms, or Imperial Guard sleeved plastic arms. The left hand figure with the mustard waistcoat got one of the Confrontation arms, plus a cut down arm from a modern Dark Vengeance plastic Chaos Cultist. I sculpted a tiny little edge on his waistcoat at the shoulders to disguise the join.

The shotgun arms on the guy on the right are from Victoria Miniatures. They're really nice parts and with a little bit of tweaking for fit, make excellent additions to any of the Citadel armless human figures.

So, first two figures completed, and there's plenty more in the pipeline, including vehicles and the Water Seller himself!

The goons load up some fuel at the trading post, ahead of a long trek into the wastes.

  1. This is one of your projects I'm the most intersted in (and that's no mean feat), The frontier worlds and the opportunities they offer are really appealing and given that you already have Ash waste nomads this is heading towards something awesome.

    1. Frontier worlds resonate most with me. Necromunda is great, but I love the concept of a dust-blown world on the edge of civilisation. Most of my models are actually veering toward that setting :D

  2. Fab stuff mate - great start with the mercs, and that crawler looks amazing already, (I do love me a bit of toyhammer). I'm really looking forward to watching this take shape!

    1. The crawler is pretty much ready for paint. I need to add a few more grab handles, and some minor details. Its been sat on top of a cupboard gathering dust for at least 18 months, so it will be good to finish it :)

  3. Lovely work so far; I've got a vested interest as I've been working on my very own mercenary gang in the same vein as yours. Looking forward to seeing how that vehicle turns out..

    1. Cheers Stuart. I'm in favour of swapping ideas and I've been keeping a keen eye on your gang. I particularly like the guy with the lizard on the chain :)

  5. Great stuff as always. (particularly the mustard waistcoat, which is somehow very appealing)

I also like the head swap on the girl with the mystery gun (I have painted it, and still do not know what it is supposed to be), as it helps her fit in with the rest of those fellas.

    1. I like mustard as a colour, it's not used often enough I think!

The girl with the mystery gun is toting an autocannon I believe? I think the head swap was pretty important to integrate her :)

  6. Axiom, those look ace. Those were some particularly evocative imagines. I'm curious to see what you'll do with the water seller.

Will the Imperium being running in when the Eye of Terror blinks and putting a bit of stick about?

    1. The water seller will come in due course - I plan to be fairly faithful to the illustrations.

As for the Imperium being present or not, we shall see!

  7. I'm rarely so consumed with envy at the prospect of your games that it makes it difficult to comment, but what Rogue Trader fan wouldn't want to play a campaign on Logans World?

The Maniacs are the perfect choice too. A wonderful start to what is likely to be one of your most popular projects I reckon.

    1. Sorry cheetor, maybe we can try and arrange some guest slots if the planets align? I honestly can't wait to get my teeth into it :)

The Maniacs seemed like the obvious choice, and my use of them is rather overdue, so it all came together nicely.

  10. I'm glad I'm not the only one with a 'shelving' issue when it comes to projects :)

The Crawler is coming along nicely Jon. Any colour scheme in mind yet? Oh, and have you sorted out how your gunna tackle the front tracks? You know, the part you mentioned last post, where the tracks are merged in the centre.

Your mini conversion output is nothing short of a miracle in my book too...you and JB are quite frankly 'machines' and I am in awe everytime you guys post stuff. I try (without much success) to keep up with the pair of you....but I'm only human, so I fail :(

Looking forward to seeing the finished Sand Crawler.

    1. The tracks are an issue. I've added a bit of detailing, plus I plan to make a bit of a visual illusion with the paint - hopefully that will suffice.

My pace is pretty much down to routine - I can't keep up with JB though ;)

  11. Not only is the paint job great for both minis but you also nailed it with the base. It suits the figures perfectly in my opinion. :)

  12. Nice. Just got myself a copy of 40k RT from eBay as the nostalgia feels were strong. I think I am gonna do Logan's World too. Those images are what originally made me love 40k as a teen.

    1. It's definitely the coolest 40k setting to my mind. I love the gritty frontier feel!
