More WIPs - Xenos Pet Trader And Another Oddity

I've been messing around with a few bits and pieces with the intention of creating a nice set of terrain populated by human civilians. The actual board itself is some way off, but I have done some thinking (and modelling) of some of the civilians.

I'm furthest along with a figure that stems from an idea about a trader of exotic alien pets. You'll have seen the trader a couple of posts ago, but here's some of his accompanying scenic elements.

I've used things from a host of different sources. There's a table with high sides for small and slow moving creatures, made from the base of one of cheetor's BOYL'14 tables with added plasticard. The creatures within are primarily 15mm scale aliens, but you might spot a squig in there too!

Behind the trader himself is a hanging cage. I bought the cage part on ebay from a seller in China for the princely sum of 79 pence. The stand is made from a paperclip and an upturned Sylvanian Families plate liberated from my daughter (she won't miss it!). The cage came as a single piece - I've actually sawn off the top which will allow me to place a small creature inside when I paint it.

The corral is from a Playmobil petting zoo set I believe. I've populated it with a selection of more squigs, chaos familiars and 15mm aliens. They're on seperate bases so I can use them flexibly, but I figure the 4 big ones and 3 smaller ones is plenty enough (I suspect there's probably some fighting between the different species!).

Strange wierd things and oddities have long appealed to me, and part of the joy of converting aliens, mutants and daemons is that pretty much any whacky idea can work. Hopefully the guy below does...he's a baby-faced but sinuous creature called Wyrm. What I'll do with him, I don't know - but I like him!

He's a very simple conversion with a head from a chaos thug and the body from a bloodletter. Creepy!

I guess I'll add these to the 'pending' pile for painting. Things are mounting up!

  1. This is excellent, for some reason it really reminds me of the shop owner you encounter in the "crown of the kings" sorcery books illustrated by John Blanche, I get the same vibe (which is obviously the best of things).

You can even spot the faces of Livingstone and Jackson above the trader

  2. The cage was a great find, and the whole ensemble is coming together beautifully. More militarily pointless curiosities please!

    1. I suspect they'll be lured in by his cute fuzzy face and unthreatening demeanour. Maybe they'll never realise their mistake?!

  4. Looks like loads of fun! A fun figure to go with this would be some sort of ranting on a soapbox loonie going on about "aliens are daemons" etc. That sort of nutter is in keeping with the Imperial creed, and seems like there should be one of that ilk in every town.

    1. Soapbox loonie - I love the idea. Damn, that's another thing to add ;)

  5. That will turn into a very nice streetscene. It would be right at home in a market I'm slowly planning. I like it.

    1. Eventually I hope to make a selection of stalls plus a backdrop. A larger market would be great though - have you got any firm ideas or anything made yet for yours?
