Return to Mordheim - Nurglite Possessed

There's a possibility of me attending a Mordheim campaign weekend later in the autumn, so it seemed the perfect opportunity to have a break from sci-fi minis and do something fantasy (it must be at least a decade since I last played a game of Mordheim, and I think that might have just been a one-off game).

It was a toss-up between skaven and possessed, but in the end I went for a Nurgle-themed possessed warband (they will also do double duty as a Frostgrave warband). These guys are primarily going to be classic Realm of Chaos era miniatures, including some of the lovely Bob Olley pestigors and gorgeous Jes Goodwin sculpts. First up are my magister and warlock hired sword (or wizard and apprentice in Frostgrave):

Magister (left) and warlock (right).

Both models are from Citadel's excellent chaos sorcerers range. The magister is a simple weapon swap on Sli'ith Iron Lung, replacing the empty flapping hand with a skaven mace (more useful in Mordheim gaming). The warlock is an unmodified Hess Poison Breath. I like the shared aesthetic that these guys have with the 'gas masks' and pointy hoods -  a motif I'm planning to use again across the warband.

The new hand was just pinned in place and the join covered with some greenstuff.

I wanted the warband to feel Nurgley, but not rely on the usual greens and browns. Going for the dirty white robes gave the right vibe and has allowed the fleshy pinks to pop nicely. I'm considering whether the pestigors will get dark, almost black skin and fur to contrast with the white clothing.

I decided that the weird-face thing was some kind of face-hugger type parasite.

Watch out for the staff - it probably spews noxious gases!

All in all I'm happy with this pair and am very much looking forward to tackling the rest of the warband!

  1. I remember the Mordheim tournament arranged by Iron Sleet (amongst others) with both John Blanche and Tuomas Pirinen joining in too. It was set in Finland if memory serves. I was going to enter a warband in for it too, but stupid mental health issues got in the way. I still have it half-finished on my worktop.

    1. Oh, that's a real shame, that would have been an amazing event. Perhaps you can revisit the warband - what were they?

    2. They were my take on what would a Middenheimer warband, but after twenty years of exposure to the cursed city. So, lots of lycanthropic mutations in both body and mind.

  3. Never got to play Mordheim. I think it was a case where i had to choose between that game or Necromunda due to limited teenaged hobby funds. Shame, cos the premise is right up my alley. (Frostgrave on the other hand was easy to collect for as I already have a sizable DnD mins collection.)

Really liking your take on the Nurgle aesthetic and choice of sculpts for these first characters. (I am tho noticing another "White" scheme in your repertoire? Not that it's a bad thing, you paint white very well so I'm enjoying seeing more.)

    1. You've got me! Another white scheme. I really need to expand my colour horizons!!

Mordheim is a great game (although falling can be brutal and armour is largely useless!). You can easily re-skin a Mordheim warband as a Frodtgrave one or vice versa!

  4. Ah, Mordheim my favourite gaming fallback. You've done the old sculpts justice.

  8. Very nice indeed! I really like the design of those models. You could carry the crude gas mask look onto the pestigors. I used to play quite a bit of Mordheim and Necromunda, and while they could be very random, I liked the opportunity for conversions and individual characters.

    1. Ooh, that's an interesting idea for the beastmen. I'm planning on using some of the lovely Bob Olley pestigor, but gas masks would be a fun thing to play around with.
