Bang-Bang Alys - Scavvy Heavy Stubber

Before anyone says anything, I know scavvy gangs can't have heavy stubbers. But cool figures trump rules restrictions, and Bang-Bang Alys is perfectly usable in N18 hive scum gangs or Stargrave crews!

This figure came about as I was trying to think of ideas for scavvy characters based on Jes Goodwin sculpts. Once you narrow it down, an Escher heavy spliced with an Eldar warlock makes total sense.

Bang-Bang Alys has the torso of the Escher plasma gun-toting heavy, but with the weapon swapped out for the Escher heavy stubber. The backpack is from a Gorkamorka mutie, and the little spanner is from a modern GW kit (I think one of the new squats).

I attacked the warlock's robe with a knife and pin vice to add rips and holes. The rest of the job was to cover all of the joins with sculpted rags, tattered clothing and miscellaneous adornments and hopefully tie everything together.

The bright yellow respirator is probably a bit to shiny and new for scavvies, but I suspect it was stolen from a more affluent ganger. Plus it looks cool!

A word on John Blanche

The news of John Blanche passing away earlier this week has been inescapable for anyone involved in the Games Workshop hobby. Most of you will have, like me, seen the wave of tributes to John and the impact of his artwork in shaping the look and feel of the Warhammer and Warhammer 40k settings. John's illustrations and concept sketches for the Confrontation game are quite simply a core element of why I love the setting so much. His Confrontation scavvy illustration is one of my most treasured pieces of original artwork.

I am lucky enough to have met John on multiple occasions. He was generous with his time, delighted in the creativity of others and was completely enthused by the hobby. I am glad to have been able to spend some time in his company.

RIP John.

    RIP Master John...

  2. Very nice conversion. The long coat/robe really fits the Confrontation scavvies, as does the respirator. She could always be packing a very large and clumsy autogun...

    1. Thanks! The long coat vibe is inextricably linked to scavvies in my mind. Good call on the over-sized autogun too ๐Ÿ˜‰

    2. I reckon that anything probably breaks down to autogun levels after the scavvies have got hold of it! Oh, and that was me in the last post - I pressed the wrong button!

    3. You're probably right. A sub-optimal and ineffective but overly cumbersome weapon sounds just the thing for scavvies!

  3. What a magnificent idea and a brilliant execution. Lovely work.
Of course Master Blanche will be missed. But he will be remembered.

  4. Great conversion, that heavy stubber is a nice piece. With the respirator it looks like an Escher ganger who fell on hard times, perhaps.. John Blanche is a sad loss but you are very lucky to have an original work!

    1. I very much like the design of the Escher heavy stubber - it's much nicer than the more chunky versions the other gangs had to make so with! Thanks

  5. Did Bang Bang get their name from having a big gun or more of reputation of what they get upto on the weekends. Ohh er.

  6. The only rule that matters is the rule of cool. Whoever told you "Scavvies can't have heavy stubbers" was clearly misinformed. They forgot about the "cool" exception, and it's probably best not to play with them anyway. (Probably the same people who said space marines can't have shuriken catapults, and we all know they're wrong about that.)

Bravo! Lovely conversion, as always. And a great name for a great character. :-)

    1. Ah yes, the classic 'cool' exception. I always forget that rule ๐Ÿ˜‰

      Glad you like this one!

  7. Alys is one of the best conversions you've done I think. She just looks like she'd always been in the plan in that current version. Good stuff sir.
I like to think the other gangers are all crushing on her, but they'll never get close cos she loves that big gun of hers more than she'd ever care to offer to another being.

    1. Thanks so much Dai! I maintain that it's all down to Jes Goodwin's crisp, clean & consistent sculpting.

You're probably right about Alys - she might get all the scavs doing her dirty work, but doesn't need their other attentions!

  8. O and, a very big RIP to John. I never got to meet him, but his art was part of what got my young self drawing and painting way back in the 80's.

    1. I think you could cut & paste that verdict about John to pretty much everyone who grew up with the hobby - he was a hugely influential icon.
