Ahead of the release of Stargrave, I've been chatting through the requirement for a range of beasts for mid-game encounters. Although I have quite a few beasts, there are some gaps - I don't have any flocks or alien birds for example - nor did I have any giant insects. So I've started looking in my boxes to see what I could dig out. First up is this lovely Rogue Trader ambull, which will also stand in as the giant insectoid porigata for Stargrave.
Oh dear, you don't really want something like this emerging from the undergrowth! |
I painted the ambull up in a lunch break as it was happily already assembled and undercoated. I went for a very simple dark blue-green basecoat with a wash, several layers of drybrushing and some sharp edges picked out with the brush.
All in all, less than an hour spent, and another nice beastie to use in my games!
Love the Classic Ambull.
ReplyDeleteIt's an iconic miniature isn't it?
DeleteLove the colors on it. Gives me more of that alien vibe over the traditional terrestrial browns. Definitely would want to tackle with this beast.
ReplyDeleteThanks Hobbs, I was hoping to capture the alien-ness of it :)
DeleteSimple but effective paint job. The eyes and mandibles really contrast well with the dark carapace. I think it looks better than the old studio tan scheme too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dai, glad the eyes and mandibles draw the eye :)
DeleteI like it in the dark blue! It feels like he's a man in a rubber suit, whcih is intensely suitable for this vintage of mini.
ReplyDeleteI suspect the Doctor would easily be able to calm down an ambull by working out that it was only croos because of toothache!
DeleteClassic looks fab!
ReplyDeleteCheers Simon!
DeleteLovely work. Such an iconic miniature. I painted my one just recently too. Love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks Millsy! I love the ambulls - definitely ingrained into my RT foundations.
DeleteI had been saving my Ambull for an unknown future project and I too have a few gaps in my Stargrave bestiary so thanks for the idea!
ReplyDeleteIt's a great opportunity to get some of these fringe characters and beasties painted up :)
DeleteLess than an hour! Oh my, that's wonderful! I like the colours, it looks quite menacing!
ReplyDeleteThanks Suber! As there are only 4 colours, it was pretty easy with washes and drybrushing to put it out quickly!
DeleteAn hour!? Fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Curis about the rubber suit vibe, and Dai and Hobbs about the the improvement over the traditional browns. This scheme works for all sorts of reasons.
And only an hour?!
Yep, an hour! Basecoat, wash, drybrush, wash, edge highlights, eyes, done.
DeleteFunnily enough when I'd finished it, I thought it was a paint scheme that owes a lot to your approach :)
looks great for such a 'quick' paint job!!
ReplyDeleteThanks very much!
DeleteThe highlights on his (chitin?) armor truly makes the piece 'pop'.
ReplyDeleteThanks - I tried to keep those highlights sharp.
