The Path to Damnation (Part 6) - Traitor Legionnaires

I'm rapidly closing out my final few models for my chaos warband, and the completion of three traitor legionnaires leaves just my warband champion to go.

I debated whether to use modified Imperial space marines for my legionnaires, but in the end couldn't resist the draw of the Rogue Trader Perry sculpts.

Chaos renegades advance into an Imperial settlement.

I selected my three favourite Khornate renegades with bolters to fill the slot in the warband. I plan to add another pair (a leader and a heavy weapon trooper) at some future point for a more useful squad of five, but for now these will do.

They are completely unmodified, so I was able to dive straight in and give them a suitably Khornate colour scheme. I agonised a little over the colour placement (did I want them in black armour with red trim? Or bronze helmets? Should I paint them indivually or uniform?). In the end I decided that followers of Khorne are equally likely to be disciplined warmongers as frothing berserkers, and that a standardised colour scheme is perfectly acceptable!

The trio got a similar colour scheme to the other units in the warband, with red as the primary rather than accent colour. As there was no flesh on show, I decided to render the helmets in bone as a nod to the pale flesh and fur tones used on some of the other figures.

All in all I think they look a suitably menacing and potent group!

  1. Just because you're a crazed psychotic doesn't mean that you shouldn't go for a matching ensemble !

    1. Even hand to hand combat is better when it's synchronised ;)

  2. Really good work picking out the sculpts that go together! I always see that entire era of Chaos Renegades as very hodgepodge, so it's great to see careful selection at play.

I really like the boldness of the red – keeping the trims the same colour as the plate really sells the classic Realm of Chaos vibe.

    1. Thanks Curis. The range is pretty hit and miss - some fantastic sculpts rubbing shoulders with some frankly weird looking ones!

Glad you approve of the red.

  4. I love the fairly simple colour scheme on these guys. Really gives a proper military vibe, and those bone-coloured helments are perfect.

    1. Glad you like them! I very nearly painted the helmets black, but decided to push colours more.

  7. Beautiful! Classic yet bold scheme, but the white heads work much better than I could have thought

    1. Thanks Suber! In reality the simple scheme was partially selected for speed, but I think it works.

  8. Simple works wonderfully with the colours you've chosen mate. As has been said before, they fit the classic images and a full unit of 5 is demanded now!

  9. The white helmet gives them an alien look I like a lot. Painting the armour trim the same colour as the rest is also a good way to stay sane, save time and make them more serious, you don't have to paint all the details all the time. This really makes me want to do my khornates now !

    1. Thanks JB. I do like the look of the trim painted in another colour, but the time investment outweighed any additional benefit to the look IMO. Will you paint your Khorne renegades in the same black as the rest of your traitors?

  10. These look gorgeous. I have a dozen or so of these minis, various poses, in my leadpile... I've been afraid to paint them because I wasn't sure what to do with them!

    1. Thanks Stephen. I'm as guilty as you are for having them in my leadpile - I think these have hung around for about 4 or 5 years before I finally found a purpose for them. Sometimes having a game lined up is the push that's needed!

  11. You managed to bridge the gap in painting style from 1989 to 2019 very deftly here Axiom.
    Very impressive.

    1. Thanks cheetor! I think the style of the late 1980s was a bit more gaudy, so dialling back the detailing a touch, but keep rich vibrant colours does enough to update and act as a retro nod. I hope so anyway!
