Harry the Hammer & Friends (Part 1 - John Blanche)

I'm lucky enough to live within striking distance of Wargames Foundry, and was very pleased to visit the Harry the Hammer & Friends exhibition on it's opening day.

The exhibition runs to 12th December 2021 and comprises art from the private collection of Bryan and Diane Ansell. The exhibition features some iconic pieces from the early days of Citadel and Games Workshop by artists including John Blanche, Ian Miller and Wayne England.

Strontium Dogs - Evans the Fist

Whilst most of the now OOP Wargames Foundry 2000AD range are too large to work comfortably alongside Citadel's earlier range, there are a couple that are just about scale-compatible. Like Torso from the last post, Evans the Fist fits in with my other Strontium Dogs. Plus the grumpy looking sod is a cool sculpt!

I gave Evans another simple comic-styled paint job based on a coloured image I found on Comic Vine. Like other Strontium Dog characters, there's no real consistency in costume configuration or colours - Evans is shown in khaki or lime green or blue and white, or this natty grey and terracotta.

Strontium Dogs - Torso and Thickskin Dixon

Making the most of my current enthusiasm for Strontium Dogs, I knocked out another pair over the weekend. This pair includes Mutant Army General George Moore aka The Torso from Newcastle, and another Stront of my own creation, Thickskin Dixon.

Leading the Choir - Astropath Mother Cantor Mechthild

Over at the Ammobunker Inq28 forums, Commissar Molotov is running a monthly competition with the aim of getting folks motivated to make and paint something new. January is the first round, with a theme of Primus inter Pares - First Among Equals:

With it being the first month, it makes sense for the theme to be about being 'the first.' This might be an Inquisitor, on the brink of embarking upon his career - or a hoary old veteran hardened by a lifetime of horror. A Priest leading hordes of zealots, or an experience veteran leading a stormtrooper kill team. It could be an Imperial Guard veteran, the leader of a hab-stack kill-gang. Perhaps is might be wise to consider who the 'equals' are: perhaps your character might simply be one who takes a lead role in certain aspects - a wizened scribe who serves as one of his master's most favoured servants.

After some consideration, I realised that the obvious gap in my collection is a senior astropath. In the novel Blind by Matthew Farrer, there are several hierarchical ranks of astropaths mentioned - the one that seemed obvious to represent a senior astropath is that of the Cantor (or choirmaster). Very definitely a first among equals.

I turned to my box of unused figures and turned up this Bride of Frankenstein I picked up at Wargames Foundry from their £1 cabinet of miscellaneous figures. You can see I had already made a start in adding the archetypal Astropath's cane:

I have always loved the character of the Rogue Trader adventurers range, and I really enjoy looking for suitable non-comms and civilians to populate my collection.

 

I was very much excited when it emerged at BOYL'15 that Foundry had put a set of old unreleased Citadel Rogue Trader figures into production. I immediately snaffled some on the day. If you want to get hold of a set yourself, you need look no further than the Foundry website!

 

My favourite conceptually from the set is the scribe / member of the Adeptus Administratum. If you follow the Eldritch Epistles blog, you'll be aware that the figure is a very close match to one of the illustrations from the Rogue Trader blog.

Unfortunately, the pose on the sculpt is rather oddly disco, with its pointing finger and toe-tapping lead foot. That's not to say you can't make a very nice job of the paint and end up with a good looking figure (see Sho3box and Leadplague). I just wanted to make mine a little less obtrusive:
