Back at the end of 2017, the excellent Zealot Miniatures ran their Twisting Catacombs: Minotaur Horde Kickstarter. Along with the huge and beautifully sculpted minotaurs, the Kickstarter also included the Villager's Prison - a small scenic piece (I assume used to keep the minotaur's food fresh).
I figured that the prison was pretty genre non-specific, and would be suitable for post-apocalyptic and sci-fi gaming, so I picked one up to use as a scenic item and objective piece.
I'm really pleased that I did, having got round to painting it up. The prison is supplied with four resin walls and a roof, detailed on the external facings (and the roof underside). The pieces are really nice and close fitting and excellently cast.
Each of the four sides reveals a selection of poor unfortunates, crammed into the cramped confines of the prison. Because of the nature of the piece, there is no genre-specific clothing on show - just a selection of rags.
I went for a pretty quick and simple paint job - block colours, washes and drybrushing, aiming to make things look grimy and dusty. After that it was just a case of picking out the odd detail like the hair and beards.
The roof is weighed down with this enormous block of stone, which also has a nice amount of texture sculpted onto it. All in all this is a really nicely sculpted and cast little piece of terrain. It will be the ideal objective for nefarious slavers and heroic freedom fighters to battle over.

That's different! But very nicely done, and a great objective marker.
ReplyDeleteHopefully it will come in useful in a range of settings!
DeleteOh, I saw that piece in the KS, I now regret not gettting it in time! It looks great, it does fit in any ambientation, I love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks Suber. Funnily enough, it was the one item in the KS that I really wanted! It would look great in your Genestealer cult caverns :)
DeleteGreat work on this unusual piece! While it might be a bit primitive for some settings, it could still work as something impromptu set up by the baddies.
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely fringe world sci-fi, rather than sleek hi-tech. But that fits nicely with my stuff :)
DeleteThat's a fun piece. You can imagine the Space Minotaurs taking the big rock off the top them poking about for the tastiest looking prisoner. You got any of the fabled Space Minotaurs to go with this? Or plans for a big dude with a bigger appetite?
ReplyDeleteI do have a pair of space minotaurs as it happens - I just acquired the second one only a few weeks ago (having parted with my original pair about 10 years ago!). Perhaps I need to get them painted up!
DeleteCorrr! Two? Such wealth!
DeleteI wear them around my neck to attract girls with my obvious bling.
DeleteThat is an excellent objective/terrain piece. Great non genre specific bit.
ReplyDeleteI'd love some more pieces that were similarly flexible. Thanks Sean :)
DeleteGreat work on those pieces. Actually those prison pieces would also make excellent horror-themed vignettes.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, it could fit in a lot of places. Souls for Cthulhu to devour perhaps?
