I was lucky enough to be offered a free figure through the 'Free Mini Friday' initiative over at the Oldhammer Facebook group. The principle is pretty straightforward - someone gives a figure to the first person to ask for it. That person then commits to paint it within a week, and to offer up another figure to someone else on the following Friday.
The figure kindly given to me was a rather terrifying vintage Grenadier Demon from the Fantasy Lords Demon set (thanks Matthew!):

So what could I use this rather horrific-looking entity as? A Daemon? An Alien lurker? A tangled, unpleasant monstrosity to prey on unsuspecting heroes. Yes, yes and yes!
The daemonic entity is cornered by Inquisitor Dirske of the Ordo Malleus. |
I decided to replicate some of the colour palette used on my earlier gribbly deamons and chaos cultists - pale flesh with some pinky red.
I also tried out a bit of a blend to black on the extremities of his limbs, which seems to have come out OK.
He got dark brown claws and some pale bone teeth, while his dorsal tentacles, mouth and 'nose' all got some washes of red and purple.
Finally, I gave him black eyes with a spot of gloss. Hopefully you can see a family resemblance to Wyrm - my earlier mutated monstrosity. I suspect they have lots of fun hanging out together!
It was something of a refreshing treat to paint up something completely left-field and unexpected. Hopefully my contribution to Free Mini Friday will serve the same purpose elsewhere

He's great, I believe he wold be great friends with Jar jar mino as well !
ReplyDeleteBunny, kangaroo and snake are good friends. They often play together :)
DeleteIt belongs in a jar jar more like... drown it in formaldehyde!
DeleteTo safely study in years hence. Just watch the it stops twitching.
DeleteYour first gribbly for the project perhaps? ^^
ReplyDeleteVery possibly :D
DeleteAwesome stuff. When you base these kinda miniatures up, do you cut a hole in the slots base and recess it with the existing cast on base? Only reason I ask is that I have a load of star lords stuff (which still) needs basing and painting.
ReplyDeleteI know plenty of people who blend integral bases into a slotta using greenstuff, but I don't like the little hillock look, so I actually saw figures off the integral bases. I guess I could sink them into slotta bases, but that seems to be more work.
DeleteYou did great job on this one!
ReplyDeleteTotally not of this world! Very Lovecraftian! :D
Thanks very much! It's a really great sculpt I must say - very much stood the test of time.
DeleteAbsolutely cracking job on him mate, take a bow! I'm quite looking forward to the elf landing it has to be said, besides a random eldar the other week, I've never painted an elf released prior to 2002
ReplyDeleteThat's an incredible statement - you need to increase your pointed-ear quotient forthwith ;)
DeleteGlad you like this guy :)
Wooow, creepy and menacing, you made this stand out. Scary! Brrr
ReplyDeleteThat's what I was aiming for! I like to make you shudder ;)
DeleteStrikes me far more as an alien than daemon. And a cornered and frightened one at that.
ReplyDeletePalette matches the sculpt wonderfully - nicely done.
Cornered, frightened, DANGEROUS!
DeleteBurn it with fire. Blessed promethium, just to be sure.
ReplyDeleteBetter safe than sorry ;)
DeleteThis ugly fucker, with his other period pals, is a really cool mini from that specific series. D&D minis IMHO from that era, on the whole, looked god awful! This dudes an exception.
ReplyDeleteI can't seem to recall where, but I'm pretty sure their all available. brand new, from a few miniature manufacturers. I was going to buy a couple a few years back, but alas, my memory is not what it used to be....what with all the drink.
I live the paint job on him Jon! I must try out that dark blending on a very light coloured mini one of these days. Seen it a few times, almost always the effect is really cool.
Cheers :)
Mirliton still sell this guy and his box-mates I've discovered. I'm not really familiar with the rest of the range, but as a general rule I'm more than happy to carefully select gems :)
DeleteThe light to dark blend was pretty easy - I painted the transition between black and flesh with layers of a wash diluted with medium.
Nice job on this model - I am going to steal that color scheme for something...
ReplyDeleteSteal away!
DeleteHe looks suitably vile.
ReplyDeleteRepulsive, certainly a bit of The Thing (1982) going on there.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness ... those skin tones look FANTASTIC. May I know what colours you used so I can shamelessly copy you?
