Rogue Quest Level 8: The Magic User - Dwight Jelton

Last week in our ongoing 'Rogue Quest' project, JB posted a very nice looking barbarian. His interpretation played up to the archetype really nicely. For my fourth member of my adventuring party, I wanted to get my magic user sorted. JB has already visited the magic user archetype with his creepy blue-eyed psyker, and I confess I've ploughed the same furrow by selecting a 40k psyker figure.

It was about time that I painted up one of the Marauder Confrontation Psyker gangers, so this seemed like the ideal opportunity. I selected my favourite of the four (third from left in the image below).

I'd never seen a painted version of this particular psyker, so I was in the unusual position of interpreting the figure's paint scheme from scratch...and what a odd character he is! He put me very much in mind of Elton John in the 1970s. Don't believe me? Well I'll prove it:

Piano-rock stars are fashion icons to many Psykers.

The Marauder psyker model is a riot of flamboyant details, suggesting a rather vain and peacock-like temperament. He wears a high-collared jump suit, with a fur cape over his left shoulder. He's adorned his suit with a riot of armour, bangles and psychic icons strapped across his body. Then he's decided that a natty bandana is in order. Finally, to complete the look, he's added a pair of shades!

I decided to paint the bodysuit in a dull blue (the same blue as I've been using across the adventuring party), with a pale skin tone for contrast. The white fur, gold metal and pink bandana attempt to add some bling and give the psyker some real swagger. What I love about painting figures without reference, is that you can make delightful discoveries about them - in this case, not only is Jelton a psychic mutant, but his left hand is deformed, with only three large fingers. Definitely unsanctioned!

Dwight Jelton is a dangerous man to know - preening, loud-mouthed and cocksure. He keeps bad company and double-crosses his acquaintances. But for all that, as a psyker for hire, he is regularly in demand for his particular brand of violent and spectacular psychics. You might not like him. You will certainly keep your eye on him. You probably need him.

Dwight Jelton lead's the adventurers through scumtown, ready to blast any opposition with balefire.

    1. Maybe you can get round to your gang after the greenskins? You'll get bonus points for painting the whole set :)

  2. My favourite of the four in the party so far, which is no mean feat.

Five million extra kewl internet points for getting seventies Elton John into the mix. I now have Rocket Man in my head, also a bonus.

    1. I think it says something about your particular tastes that this guy presses your buttons. I'm not entirely sure what though...!

It's nice to send people away with a catchy tune I think ;)

  3. Very cool mate, lovely job with a tricky sculpt... I must admit, I've looked at this mini and gave up in confusion! I particularly like the effect on the armour... how did you do it?

    1. Glad you like him. I was wary of painting him up, but he seems to have turned out OK.

The armour was painted using old Citadel paints - shining gold, then highlighted with mixes of shining gold and mithril silver. It then got washes of sepia, devlan mud and purple in the shadow areas, before a final highlight of the gold/silver mix.

  4. He's an awesome looking mini Axiom. Was he ever released? All four of those confrontation guys look good enough to have been on the market.

The old classic minis are still the best IMHO :)

    Cheers

    1. The Marauder Confrontation figures were released at US Games Day 1991 and then apparently only available for a limited time after - this makes sense due to the demise of the Marauder brand and disappearance of Confrontation.

So they are out there, just not very common.

  6. He looks cold and tough at once, I can definitely picture him still standing, looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid. ;)

    1. There's a deathly stare behind those shades, don't you doubt it!

  7. Ha, I love this one, you know how to interpret a character, that's for sure! :D
Seriously, the sense of group, of cohesion, is truly remarkable, being all the minis so different. This guy turns to be a pretty nice addition! Specially at those crazy karaoke group nights!

    1. Thanks Suber! I'm trying to use similar colours on each - they all have the same blue, but they also all have a yellow-ish colour (sash on the Eldar, gold plates on the psyker, dress on the barbarian and the jacket on the squat) and red-ish/pink colour (scabbard on the Eldar, headband on the psyker, hair on the barbarian and straps on the squat). The squat is very much desaturated compared to the others, but it works for the character.

I'm still debating how this will work on my next figure, who will probably be predominantly green. To avoid jarring, I'm going to have to think carefully about how I tie the figure in with some spot placement of the same colours again.

As for Elton John ... I love Tiny Dancer and Rocket Man. Both are super songs!!!

    1. Can't beat a bit of Elton ;) Glad you like the colours. I seem to go through phases and that blue is my favourite of the moment!
